水猎龙属名Hydrorion,由希腊文的水“Hydro”、和猎人的“orion”组成,意思为水的猎者)是蛇颈龙目的一个,生存于早侏罗世托阿尔阶。 [1]已知化石包括德国西南波西多尼亚页岩英语Posidonia Shale发现的数件标本。 [2]唯一种是短鳍水猎龙Hydrorion brachypterygius),最初先后被描述为蛇颈龙小锁龙的一个[1][3]水猎龙是种较小的蛇颈龙类,最大标本身长测为4米(13英尺)。[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

分类

一开始理察·欧文于1839年提出编号为BRSMG Cb 2337的标本为蛇颈龙新种-短鳍蛇颈龙(Plesiosaurus brachypterygius),理察·莱德克(Richard Lydekker)表示反对,他认为短鳍蛇颈龙属于巨首蛇颈龙(Plesiosaurus macrocephalus,现在称作巨首战殇龙)的成年体。[2]直到1923年,弗里德里希·冯·休尼英语Friedrich von Huene(Friedrich von Huene)正式发表,认定短鳍蛇颈龙是独立一个种。[1][13]乌尔利希斯·M·怀尔德(Urlichs M Wild)于1994年,将此物种归入小锁龙,之后迈克尔·W·麦施(Michael W.
