第一次世界大戰期間，德意志帝國海軍和奧匈帝國海軍的U艇（即潛艇）共擊沉了逾6000艘協約國或中立國艦船，總重量超過14200000噸。其中，共有37位德籍王牌艇長獲官方確認戰績在100000噸以上，他們合共擊沉或繳獲2686艘艦船，總噸位達5920339噸。[1][2]
