生存還是毀滅
「生存還是毀滅」(英語:To be, or not to be),是莎士比亞戲劇作品《哈姆雷特》第三幕第一場,哈姆雷特王子一段獨白的第一句前半部,很多人也會用這句來指整段獨白。在王子的演講中,他考慮了死亡與自殺,哀嘆這痛苦又不公的生活,也承認另一種選擇可能會更糟。這段開場白是世界文學、戲劇與音樂作品中常見被引用的一句,整句是:「生存還是毀滅,這是一個值得考慮的問題」(To be or not to be, that is the question)。

- Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
- The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
- Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
- And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep
- No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
- The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks
- That Flesh is heir to? 'Tis a consummation
- Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep,
- To sleep, perchance to Dream; aye, there's the rub,
- For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come,
- When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
- Must give us pause. There's the respect
- That makes Calamity of so long life:
- For who would bear the Whips and Scorns of time,
- The Oppressor's wrong, the proud man's Contumely,
- The pangs of dispised Love, the Law’s delay,
- The insolence of Office, and the spurns
- That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
- When he himself might his Quietus make
- With a bare Bodkin? Who would Fardels bear, [F: these Fardels]
- To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
- But that the dread of something after death,
- The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
- No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
- And makes us rather bear those ills we have,
- Than fly to others that we know not of?
- Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
- And thus the native hue of Resolution
- Is sicklied o'er, with the pale cast of Thought,

第一四開本(Q1, 1603)是哈姆雷特最早的版本,但被認為是劇院演出時抄寫的山寨版,而非劇作早期的草稿(因此被稱為"壞四開本");Q1的某些地方確實和通行文本相符,但是在"生存還是毀滅"一段中問題頗多。例如行文中用"Hope"代替"dread",與通行文本的意思大相逕庭。此處的單詞同樣以現代正字法拼寫。
