牛背鹭属（学名：Bubulcus）为鹭科的一个属，由法国博物学家夏尔·吕西安·波拿巴于1855年进行命名，来自同字的中世纪拉丁语“牧牛者”之意。^[2]该属下辖西牛背鹭及牛背鹭两物种，^[3]借由西牛背鹭的其中一个异名为Ardea bubulcus的重名关系，该物种成为本属的模式种。^[4]^[5]^[1]然而在某些分类中会将两个物种视为单一物种，此时本属则为单型属。^[6]^[7]^[8]
