e northern Shans, andunlike the Karens and southernShans, who have the jacket cutlike an open English vest. Large holes are bored through the ear lobe; and in some tribes itis customary on holidays and market days to wear in the ear an orna-mental silver tube from six to nine inches long by haK an inch indiameter. The front end of each tube is filled with the blooms of thescarlet hybiscus, sprays of orchid, or some other gay-roloured flowers.which hang down on each side of the face. In some of the tribes themen—in common with the southern Shans—enlarge the opening tosuch an extent that they can insert a section of bamboo of one anda half inches in diameter.
